Towards the future of power generation, concentrating solar thermal has been growing as it has potential to contribute in economics and technological improvements. Due to the instability of solar energy, designing thermal energy storage system is a reliable way to provide continuous power generation. However, developing efficient and affordable energy storage devices in concentrating solar thermal technology is as complex as developing new sources of energy. In the present day challenges, constructing modular and proper management of combined system for thermal energy storage (TES) is the reason behind providing better system performance. The objectives of this research are therefore to develop a working prototype of hybrid solar thermal energy storage system (HSTESS) at control temperature and to analyse the performance of heat absorption for the working prototype in complete operation. In this research, a small scale TES tank equipped with the insulation system is designed and constructed. Based on the modular concentrating solar thermal dish idea, a thermal heat receiver is fabricated to serve as the solar heat supply. This is followed by the system design required that the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) torches installation as fossil fuel heat supply unit with the TES tank. The proposed system is integrated with 2 m parabolic dish for the field testing. Using the motor powered mechanical pump, the proposed system was able to complete a daily cycle at different flow rate of heat transfer fluid (HTF) and this proposed concept using the water as the HTF. Throughout the research and development, the outcomes are divided into three categories namely preliminary analysis, computational analysis and working prototype evaluation. In the preliminary study, it was found that cotton and glass wool is a suitable insulator to be used for temperature below than 100 ℃. The computational analysis consists of fluid flow simulation, gas piping system flow simulation and heat transfer of TES, are conducted to predict correct operation of the proposed design. The 3D model resulted for fluid flow simulation at a temperature range of 45.9 ℃ to 47.9 ℃ at velocity of 1 m/s. The simulation for the gas piping system design resulted in 116.45 m/s and this velocity value is used to calculate the heat rate. Then the heat transfer of TES resulted at temperature range of 20 ℃ to 85.45 ℃ using heat rate of 95 kW. In the working prototype evaluation, the experiment is conducted in three different modes; initial charging cycle, charging cycle and discharging cycle. All modes resulted in the temperature range of 40 ℃ to 65 ℃ and heat absorption range of 0.66 kJ to 10.57 kJ. The system integration of the working prototype resulted in 10 h reserved period using volume flow rate of 13.2 L/min. In addition, the HSTESS heat loss provided by the TES tank, receiver and HTF piping system at the maximum of 80.14 W. Using the second law efficiency, the heat absorb obtained 9 kW at 30 % of the overall efficiency for volume flow rate of HTF, 13.2 L/min. In conclusion, the HSTESS is found applicable for the concentrating solar thermal improvements to collect, absorb and supply heat in order to achieve a sustainable solution for solar technology. This development is a way of supporting the implementation of feed in tariff (FiT) by the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia to further promote energy development in the country ER -
