Wastewater pollution has always been a major problem throughout the world. The effects of the wastewater pollution not only occur on human health but also the ecosystem even the extinction of rarely species of aquatic wildlife. The treatments for wastewater pollution are needed to control and manage the severely pollution problems all over the world especially in Malaysia. Phytoremediation is a suitable method because it is clean, efficient, inexpensive (low capital and operating costs), and no environmental disrupted. This technology uses the plants to absorb the pollutants or contaminants is greatly encouraged and promoted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In this case, Typha angustifolia will be determined on its potential as suitable plant in phytoremediation. The objectives of this research will focus on evaluation about how effectiveness of phytoremediation to remove the heavy metals which are lead and copper in petrochemical effluent. The study was carried out about 5 month's times which started from April until September 2007. The plants were obtained from Gebeng roadside and started the planting process. The sampling method was carried out 3 times a week. There were other parameters than heavy metals used to measure the effectiveness of phytoremediation in cleaning up the pollutants like BOD, COD, DO, Turbidity, Oil & Grease, pH, Ammonia and Nitrate. Typha angustifolia is a suitable plant to carry out phytoremediation which successfully absorbed over 70% of the lead contaminants in petrochemical effluent from Kaneka (M) Sdn Bhd. Besides that, the content of copper in the petrochemical effluent also was reduced over 80% by using phytoremediation. The result proved that phytoremediation is an effective method to remove the heavy metals especially lead and copper by Typha angustifolia. Typha angustifolia's growth rate was measured and the plant was grown about 0.38m average height after 10 weeks long. -Author
