In this era of complex and modem technology, water pollution has become a severe problem for the world to cope with. Enormous expenditure has been delivered to resolve this serious matter. Unfortunately, most of the efforts are to no avail without the people's awareness and responsibility towards clean environment. To prevent this phenomenon from continuing spread, researchers have found a solution by using the power of nature. It is called Phytoremediation. This concept is an improvised technique from the wetland system. The system is an alternative in wastewater engineering especially for water treatment. The water treatment act as secondary filter to our wastewater after the treatment process is complete. Uniquely, the wetland system can operate by itself without much maintenance works. This study was conducted to explore the feasibility of using plants species to remediate effluent from domestic wastewater. To achieve the objective, three selected plant species has been chosen for this project. The plants were Salvinia minima (Pokok Kiambang), Parrots Feather ( Pokok Deduit ) and Lysimachia Nummularia Aurea (Pokok Ekor Kucing). All this plant is tested with wastewater from Taman Tasik Bandar and Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) treatment plant effluent for four weeks. The water parameters that has been monitored were BOD, COD, DO, Oil and Grease, Nitrate, pH and Suspended Solids. From the overall experiment results, we found that Parrots Feather specoes contribute the highest removal percentage as follows, for BOD is 5.4%, 11.8% for COD, 4.6% for DO, 8.1 % for Suspended Solids, 15.6% for Oil & Grease and 15.3% for nitrate. Thus, among the three species selected for this research, Parrots Feather species ( Pokok Deduit ) is the most suitable plant in the removal of most water parameters. -Author
