N2  - Intersections are one of the most important parts in the road system. Their capacity can control the volume of traffic within the network system. From the highway location, design and traffic principle, intersection is defined as an area where two or more roadways are joined or crossed. Volume of traffic is important in each intersection because it shows the first impression to the operation of the intersection, whether the intersection have a traffic problem or not. This study focuses on the lane optimization at Jalan Kuantan - Gambang and Jalan Panching Intersection. The main objective of this study is to determine the current traffic performance at this intersection location such as the traffic phases and the volume of vehicle during the peak hours. The second objective of this study is to recommend the countermeasures to improve the traffic performance at the intersection. By using traditional method of traffic counting, the traffic volume is obtained. This survey is done on Thursday and Saturday during peak hour. Survey is conducted on both days to differentiate the traffic performance during weekdays and weekends. The fmding from this study shows the highest volume of vehicle during the weekday is for right turn lane to Panching from Kuantan. For weekends the fmding shows that the through lane from Kuantan to Gambang has the highest traffic volume. The result also shows that the highest type of vehicle used at this intersection is passenger car and motorcycle. As the consequences of the study, island is recommended to segregate traffic for the critical lane. -Author
