In recent years, utilizing the pre-established power distribution line for communications have become more attractive. The patients who are suffering with the chronic diseases must be monitored continuously to reduce the risk in patient’s life. Industries manufacturing healthcare equipment are incorporating the communication system modules for telemedicine, biotelemetry, tele-surgery and tele-health applications. In this research, Power Line (PL) is proposed as a communication medium for transferring the patient’s physiological parameter. Electrodes or transducers are placed on patient at appropriate locations for acquiring the Heart Rate (HR), Blood Pressure (BP), Temperature, Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Electroencephalogram (EEG). Acquired signals are digitalized and transmitted over the single phase PL cable using Power Line Modem (PLM). In this research, Low Voltage Single Phase (LVSP) power distribution cables were used for transmitting and receiving the medical signals. In a medical practitioner's room, receiver decodes the signals and a Personal Computer (PC) is used for display. The characteristic of power line is simulated as echo channel model using MATLAB software in which the data are transmitted using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) method. Performance of the simulated power line channel (SPLC) is evaluated based on the Bit Error Rate (BER). ECG and EEG signals where interfered by noise and disturbance of power line during transmission. Hence, Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter with Kaiser Window is designed using MATLAB for noise reduction. R peaks of ECG are detected based on Threshold point and proposed adaptive firefly algorithm. ECG of a patient suffering by Sinoatrial block, arrhythmia and sudden cardiac arrest are taken from physio-bank website and were analyzed using Daubechies multilevel wavelet transform. It was observed from the experimental results that parameters such as heart rate, temperature and BP are received without any errors. ECG and EEG signals were distorted due to the PL noise and disturbances. From the simulation results it was found that, the BER can be reduced by increasing the Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) size or by increasing the guard bit interval time. Adaptive firefly technique was found to be effective and efficient when compared with threshold point method. It can be concluded that low voltage power line communication using the existing power cables was found to be cost effective with sufficient speed and accuracy
