Cosmetic creams were developed from keratin protein extracted from chicken feathers. Keratin is used as an active ingredient because; it has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which helps in reducing wrinkles by stimulating the production of new skin cells. In the production of keratin cosmetic cream, all the chemicals selected were mixed at 60°C to produce a uniformly mixed cream. The creams were then tested for its physical characteristics including phase separation, centrifugal test, pH and particle size distributions. The Pre-clinical trials were conducted on rabbit. Photographic scale was developed to measure the skin improvement and the skins were tested with DermaLab Series SkinLab Combo to identify the elasticity, TEWL and hydration of skin. The optimization of viscosity of keratin cosmetic cream was done using design expert. The results showed that the keratin cosmetic creams exhibit white colour, there was no phase separation, pH was in the range of 6-7. From the photographic images, rabbit’s skin appearance was improved with time. Similar pattern was observed for all other parameters such as elasticity, TEWL and hydration. At the end of the study, the highest value for retraction time with keratin cosmetic cream was 462 ms, where as cosmetic creams without keratin, the value was 600 ms. The lower retraction time means that the skin is more elastic. For TEWL, the highest final value for all creams with keratin was 9.59 g/m2.h, while the TEWL value for creams without keratin was 12.42 g/m2.h. For hydration, the lowest average value for all keratin based cosmetic cream was 38.49 μS, while the value of hydration without keratin was 31.48 μS. From all the results, it was observed that the skin retraction time values decreases, TEWL values decrease and hydration values increase could be due to the presence of keratin in cosmetic creams. These results indicate that the rabbit skin improves and becomes healthier over the time by the application of keratin cosmetic cream. The optimum viscosity was obtained at keratin dosage of 1.25g and lecithin dosage 4.59g. In conclusion, keratin cosmetic creams produced in this research are stable and have shown improvement on the rabbit skin.
