Malaysia is fast in terms of achieving the level of industrialized countries which is the major cause of why quality of water decreases over time. It had become a serious problem in Malaysia and had led to negative consequence on the sustainability of the country’s water resources. Additionally, it was due to increase in waste dumping into upstream river ways, especially from housing and industrial areas, as well as from discharges from human activities such as farming and land development. In fact, rapid economic growth has exerted severe constraints on present water utility infrastructure, especially in areas with high economic growth. An increase in the population leads to higher demand for water supply which leads to a higher discharge of wastewater. In conjunction with that, the content of heavy metals such as Cadmium (Cd), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Iron (Fe) and Copper (Cu) in industrial wastewater can give bad impacts to the human health. Therefore, it is very important to treat the wastewater before discharge into the water system. A new technology based on environmentally friendly found to be used in this study. This use of plants termed phytoremediation actually refers to diverse collection of natural or genetically engineered plants for cleaning contaminated environments. The objectives of this study are to investigate the effectiveness of the selected aquatic plants to be used in phytoremediation technology and to study the effect of contact time in absorption of these plants. The project had been conducted for about 5 months from the initial set up work until the data analysis. The time period is from October 2016 until February 2017 to complete all the work. The selected aquatic plants are Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia Crassipes sp.), Water Lettuce (Pistia Stratiotes sp.), and Giant Salvinia (Salvinia Molesta sp.) where the water sampling was carried out once in 3 weeks for 4 months of treatment period. The 7 parameters that involved in this study are BOD, COD, TSS, DO, turbidity, Oil and Grease, Iron (Fe), Nitrite (NO2) and Nitrate (NO3) and were referred to the Standard Examination of Water and Wastewater by American Public Health Associate (APHA). The outcome that accumulated from the experiment will be dissected by utilizing the IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Statistics version 20 by using two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The significance was identified through the interaction of two independent variables on the dependent variable for example there is a significant interaction between the temperature with a time of treatment of the industrial wastewater. Thus, the simple main effect carried out if the value of p< 0.05 while the main effect carried out if the value of p>0.05 in order to identify the main differences between the two independent variables. At the end of the study, we can see that all of the three plants showed a positive respond and good performance in this phytoremediation technology to remove contaminants in industrial wastewater taken from oxidation pond at Jalan Besi, Pasir Gudang, Johor where Water Lettuce is the most effective plant among these three with nitrate percentage removal of 300%, followed by Water Hyacinth and Giant Salvinia at 250% and 73% respectively.
