This thesis aims to enhance cobalt electrodeposition from spent lithium-ion batteries (LiB) and study the capacitive performance of the recovered material. The cathode material (LiCoO2) is recovered using physical and thermal processes. The electrodeposition is done using two techniques, electrochemical method (CoEM) and magnetic electrochemical method (CoMEM). Based on Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), the magnetic driving force shows that the weight percentage of Cobalt in CoMEM lesser than CoEM. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses confirm the material composition and binding energy of Co3O4. The electrodeposition under the magnetic field (CoMEM) shows nanosheets with a mean thickness of 22 nm, while without the magnetic field (CoEM) shows accumulated particles in 3D spherical sponge shape with a diameter ranged from 1.0 to 1.5 m. the diffusion coefficient is 3-times higher than CoEM. The weakness of one plane for CoMEM is clearly shown in XRD and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM). The electrochemical studies of CoEM and CoMEM are evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic Charge/Discharge (CDC) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in a three-electrode system using 5 M KOH as the electrolyte. From both of CV and CDC the specific capacitance is calculated, and it shows that CoMEM capacitance is 4-times higher than CoEM. Specific capacitance from CV is 813 F g-1 and 170 F g-1 at 1 mV s-1 for CoMEM and CoEM, respectively. In addition, from CDC it is 1273 F g-1 and 320 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 for CoMEM and CoEM, respectively. EIS reveals that CoMEM electrode has higher electron mobility and lower resistance than CoEM. CoMEM electrode showed a high stability up to 3500 charge/discharge cycles with high capacitance retention of 98%, while CoEM electrode shows only capacitance retention of 90%. The results manifest that the effect of magnetic field on the electrodeposition enhanced its electrochemical performance.
