In meteorology, visibility is a measure of the distance at which an object or light can be clearly recognised. Visibility for a medium depends on the visible light transmission (VLT). This research describes the development of VLT measurement system to measure the visibility of air. Even though there are many types of devices that can measure VLT, each of them have their own weakness and disadvantages. Some of the devices are only suitable to be used to measure VLT for thin medium such as tint film and glass. Although VLT device for a wide medium measurement already exist, it has its own disadvantages such as big in size and the cost is relatively very expensive. There are other problems related to VLT measurement devices such as they are fails to function well at night, some of them can only carry out point measurement and faces a several errors especially in rainy, foggy and smoky conditions. Therefore an alternative VLT measurement system to cater all the above problems and weaknesses is reported in this research. The VLT measurement system reported in this thesis is using an open path method where a laser pointer is used as a light source and a spectrometer for the detector. A transmittance for a few pieces of known VLT tint films percentage is obtained and set as a measurement base. The transmittance measurement is carried out at 537.65 nm and this value is associated to VLT percentage. A relation between the transmittance and VLT percentage is obtained and a linear regression line is plotted. The linear regression line model is developed and it is hardcoded into a Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW) program in order to measure VLT percentage in real time. Experimental works is carried out to measure VLT percentage of air consist of smoke in a polymer chamber. It is found that the developed measurement system is capable to measure VLT percentage of air in 1 meter path in less than 1 s. The VLT percentage measurement using this developed system is verified by a commercial sensor called Dustmate. The result shows the reading for VLT percentage is aligned for both devices ER -
