Bioengineering technique has been widely used in Malaysia to promote stability in slope when acting as an anchorage system. Bioengineering approach in slope can be seen along the highway roads in Malaysia. Since early 1990's, Eugenia Oleina (a tree/shrub plant) has been a popular plant for landscaping because of the physical appearance that is easy-to-plant and maintained. However, the cultivation of this species on slope showed some erosion that causes shallow failures on the slope. Hence, this research is conducted to validate the usage of Eugenia Oleina to reinforce slope by determining the physical and engineering properties of Eugenia Oleina and the relationship between root tensile strength and the slope stability. Tensile test on the roots has been conducted for every two months starting from the age of three months. Graph shows that the tensile strength decreases with increasing of root diameter and no trend of aging has any effect on exponential pattern of the roots. Comparison with other tropical tree shows that Eugenia Oleina has the lowest tensile strength. The root area ratio (RAR) gives the minimum factor of safety to the slope. The result also indicates that the unrooted soil give high factor of safety compared to rooted soil with Eugenia Oleina. Thus, the planting of Eugenia Oleina as landscaping item on slopes in Malaysia is not suitable as it will decrease the stability of the slope.
