Environmental issues due to the palm oil mill effluent (POME) has come to a serious stage and endanger human’s health, and this cause human to realize the importance of the wastewater treatment. The current method in treating wastewater is not environmental sustainable. Conventional activated sludge (CAS) system consumes a lot of energy and it will cause high emission of carbon dioxide during the treatment process and therefore, new energy efficient process starts to emerge. Microalgae treatment is one of the wastewater treatment method that helped in lowering down the energy consumption and low emission of carbon dioxide. Apart from that, microalgae use sunlight and the atmospheric carbon dioxide to carry out photosynthesis and hence it is eco-friendly and environmental sustainable. This study was aimed to investigate the feasibility of new municipal wastewater treatment concepts that help to improve energy saving by using laboratory scale model and determine the effectiveness of microalgae (C. Incerta) in order to achieve a higher standard quality of palm oil mill effluent discharge. Palm oil mill effluent (POME) was being used as wastewater sample and C. Incerta as the microalgae. Few laboratory experiments were conducted to know the characteristic of palm oil mill effluent (POME). A total of 14 days was used to conduct the experiment. The microalgae were obtained from Indah Water Konsortium (IWK), Kuantan and started the cultivation process. There will be eight (8) parameters for the water quality testing which are biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate (NO3-), phosphate (PO4-P), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), oil & grease, total suspended solid (TSS), pH of POME and growth rate of C. Incerta. All the experiments were carried out by following the guideline in Standard Examination of Water and Wastewater by American Public Health Association (2005). C. Incerta is suitable microalgae and it has successfully remove about 50 % of COD and 80 % of ammoniacal nitrogen. The results proved that microalgae treatment is an effective method to remove nutrient in POME by C. Incerta ER -
