Excessive waste product disposed from oil palm mills and coal combustion plants results in environmental pollution and landfill problem. Hence, the use of waste materials as a replacement for concrete producing materials will reduce pollution. An investigation on the residual compressive strength of concrete containing coal ash (CBA) after being exposed to high temperatures and the cooling process was performed. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of temperature rise on physical properties, mass loss and residual strength of concrete specimens. Oil palm shell lightweight aggregate concrete and the specimen were exposed to various temperature levels of 100oC, 300 oC, 500 oC, and 800 oC. OPS concrete containing 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of CBA as partial sand replacement were used. Two cooling systems that is air cooling at room temperature and water cooling system with water spray using rubber pipe. The physical changes, mass loss and strength loss of concrete after exposed to high temperature were monitored. The performance of concrete specimens was found to be higher in concrete containing CBA than normal concrete. Mass loss increases due to temperature increases. The strength of the concrete decreases due to the temperature increases.
