The demand for highway lighting systems is ubiquitous, but its operation contributes to extensive financial cost and concerning environmental implications. For this reason, recent researches have investigated possible solutions to boost the efficiency of the existing lighting systems. However, the ultimate solutions for green energy enabled smart highway lighting system is still lacking in terms of cost-effectiveness and reliability. This thesis studies divergent proceedings in the literature to establish an energy-efficient green energy-based highway lighting system, taking into account the performance and environmental impact perspectives. Finally, this thesis proposes an IoT enabled Hybrid Renewable Energy System (IoT-HRES) based green highway lighting system to overcome the limitations of existing pure solar-based highway lighting solutions. The proposed system manages the green energies smartly, reduces solar dependency, and controls the lighting according to the traffic demand. A relay network architecture is considered to activate adaptive on/off switching to provide seamless lighting. This relay mechanism also ensures smooth maintenance through the back-tracking detection of the faulty lamppost. An analytical cost and reliability study has been done based on road busyness to demonstrate the cost-effectiveness of the proposed system. The proposed IoT-HRES shows the lowest value of the Requirement of Energy (ROE), Cost of Energy (COE), and maximum reliability for the implementation of the initial setup except for in the scenario of maximum road busyness, which seems to be a prime limitation. This thesis further performs a simulation to investigate the two popular communication module technologies, LoRa and IEEE 802.15.4 module for the least initial investment cost with greater performance to model the proposed IoT-HRES based highway lighting solution. Last but not least, the findings concluded by this thesis are anticipated to inform researchers and policymakers on perceiving the benefits of the ameliorated energy efficiency in the highway lighting setup. Furthermore, open issues identified in this thesis will pave the way for achieving future highway lighting systems that are not only ensuring the energy-efficiency for environmental sustainability but also facilitating a safe and seamless driving experience.
