Manufacturing activities are substantial contributors to the volume of pollution and waste generation. Therefore, society and consumers expect manufacturers take accountability to manage and minimize the effect ecologically. As manufacturers transform their supply chain with digital technology to make manufacturing processes more efficient and sustainable, equal attention is required to protecting the environment. Malaysia’s environmental protection index ranking was deteriorating, hence there was a need to reassess the practices which can aid the manufacturing firm in improving their environmental protection efforts. Thus, this study was undertaken to look into how smart production technologies adoption (SPTA) can contribute towards achieving environmental manufacturing protection improvement (EMPI) by Malaysia's manufacturing firms. In addition, the drivers for the manufacturing firms to adopt smart production technology was also explored by utilizing TOE framework. A theoretical framework underpinned by NRBV theory was developed to empirically investigate the relationship of eco-efficient supply chain integration (EESCI) as a mediator between SPTA and EMPI. A survey method was used to gather data from manufacturing firms that were registered with FMM. The methodology adopted in this study is the quantitative method. A total of 167 respondents’ data was analysed using SPSS version 28 and SmartPLS 3.2.8 to answer the research objectives stipulated. The result indicated a strong relationship between all the variables except IoT’s role on SPTA adoption and innovation’s role in contributing toward EMPI. Moreover, the mediating role of EESCI was proven with a strong relationship between information sharing and collaboration between SPTA and EMPI respectively. The result indicates that manufacturing firms must adopt SPTA and enhance EESCI to improve their environmental protection initiatives.
