Subject(s): Dissertation note: Project paper (Bachelor of Civil Engineering) -- Kolej Universiti Kejuruteraan dan Teknologi Malaysia - 2006 Abstract: The water quality of a stream is much affected by the activities taken place along it. Unfortunately, rapid urbanization around Taman Bandar increased the number of pollutants discharged to water body and deteriorates the water quality of its lake. This study is mainly concerned on the water quality analysis for Tasik Taman Bandar located in Kuantan,Pahang Darul Makmur within total area is 17.2 hectares while the area for lake is 65 000 meter square. As the biggest man made lake in Kuantan, the municipal authorities provide many facilities to enhance residents to come and bring their family together and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Tasik Taman Bandar. Two water quality standards are used in the analysis namely Water Quality Index (WQI) and Interim National Water Quality Standards (INWQS). Parameters such as Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), ph, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Ammoniacal Nitrogen (AN) and suspended solid (SS) are used to quantify the analysis. Sampling station had been setup inside the lake to obtain the representative sample. Laboratory analysis is calculated using six parameters namely COD, BOD, SS, AN, ph and DO to encompass the likely water quality for Taman Bandar intake point. The activity of land use such as construction development, the impact of the existing drainage systems and urban storm water management are identified as main contribution in the degradation of the water quality. Since the result is in class III,the water quality of Tasik Taman Bandar need to improve its source based on results of comprehensive performance evaluation. Throughout this investigation; it suggests that the revision of drainage systems and urban storm water management to achieve the long term goal as a recreational lake. The application of bio-ecological drainage can manage the lake in order to ensure its aesthetics viability, sustain good water quality while providing different recreational uses, including primary and secondary water contact activities. -Author
