520 3 _aThe current business environment is characterized by a dynamic market environment caused by market uncertainty. Mitigating this market uncertainty requires some form of flexibility known as manufacturing flexibility (MF). This research evaluates the critical determinants of manufacturing flexibility implementation in mass customization production system among manufacturing firms in Malaysia from the perspective of TOE framework and the Contingency Theory. An extensive literature review was conducted, and four constructs were identified namely smart manufacturing technology, organizational, environmental, and manufacturing flexibility. A set of questionnaires were developed based on each construct and content validity assessment were conducted with industry practitioners and academicians. Questionnaires were distributed to 1000 discrete manufacturing companies in Malaysia with 155 companies responded. An empirical assessment using PLS-SEM approach reveals that smart manufacturing technology, competitive intensity, and market turbulence are the significant factors that can enhance manufacturing flexibility implementation in mass customization production system in Malaysia. Whereas the organizational factor was found to be insignificant factors in this study. The moderating effect of the environmental factors (market turbulence and competitive intensity) were found to be insignificant in the relationship between smart manufacturing technology with manufacturing flexibility. This study provides a holistic method to implement MF in mass customization production system at the manufacturing firm’s level. However, generalization of the result is somewhat limited as only discrete manufacturing industries were involved in the study. In term of theoretical contribution, this study helps to answer the issue on the inadequacy of studies that look into factors that can enhance manufacturing flexibility in mass customization production system using the TOE framework and Contingency Theory. This study could help practitioners, and policy makers to strategized policies that relate to manufacturing flexibility implementation. Related government agencies such as Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) and Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) can use the result to devise or review their current policies in promoting better business performance among manufacturing firms in Malaysia. It also serves an attempt to develop MF constructs that can enhance MF implementation in mass customization production system in Malaysia.
