520 3 _aThe rubber industry is one of the main contributors to Malaysia’s GDP as it plays a crucial role in various sectors by providing raw materials, latex to produce products such as medical gloves, tires, and sports equipment. However, the wastewater from the rubber industry can cause a negative environmental impact, therefore, phycoremediation of rubber wastewater using microalgae is introduced as it is an energy-saving and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment method. The two main objectives of this study are to determine the nutrient removal efficiency of two species of microalgae in the rubber wastewater and to investigate the growth kinetics of two microalgae species in the rubber wastewater. This study started with the characterization of the rubber wastewater, followed by the cultivation of Chlorella spp. (UKM8) and Scenedesmus sp. (UKM9) in rubber wastewater under the condition of 25 ± 3°C, 12 hours light exposure (2000-4000 lux) for 12 days with air sparging. Parameters of the wastewater, pH, Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP) were measured once every 6 days, while Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) was measured on the first day and last day, to track the quality of the microalgae-treating wastewater. The growth kinetics of Chlorella spp. and Scenedesmus sp. were determined by using the dry cell weight method to obtain their biomass concentration. The biomass concentration was measured once every four days, where the growth kinetics parameters were calculated by using modified logistic modal. Chlorella spp. achieved 76.40% TN removal, 68.97% COD removal, and 41.48% TP removal efficiency, where Scenedesmus spp. achieved 67.70% TN removal, 58.36% COD removal, and 44.89% TP removal efficiency in rubber wastewater. These findings indicated that Chlorella spp. more suited to the removal of nitrogen and COD and Scenedesmus sp. for phosphorus removal. On the other hand, Chlorella spp. recorded a µmax of 0.4000 day-1 , Pmax of 0.1400gL-1 day-1 , and an Xmax of 1.4000 gL-1 , surpassed Scenedesmus sp., which achieved a µmax of 0.3600 day-1 , Pmax of 0.1080gL-1 day-1 , and an Xmax of 1.2000 gL-1 . This demonstrated that Chlorella spp. exhibited greater adaptability to rubber processing wastewater compared to Scenedesmus sp. Overall, the two objectives of this study were achieved.
