520 3 _aRecently, there has been an increase in focus on methylene blue-related research owing to its prolonged environmental toxicity. Several methods have been introduced for the removal of methylene blue, with photocatalytic degradation emerging as a preferred solution due to its effectiveness and environmental friendliness. However, the utilization of Fe as a photocatalyst has been limited due to its low adsorption capacity and inefficient light utilization. To address these limitations, Fe was supported on mesoporous silica nanospheres (KCC-1), known for their noteworthy physicochemical characteristics such as a large surface area and fibrous surface form, which can significantly enhance photodegradation efficiency. This research intended to synthesise Fe/KCC-1 as an efficient photocatalyst for the photodegradation of methylene blue. The preparation involved the impregnation method using a commercial Fe precursor and synthesized KCC-1, and the resulting material was characterised using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), surface area analysis (BET), and Ultraviolet-Visible-near-IR Spectroscopy (UV-Vis-NIR). The fibrous nature of the catalyst was verified by FESEM analyses. The FTIR analysis verified the silica bond in the catalyst, while XRD results showed the amorphous silica structure with the presence of Fe. XRF result confirms the silica-rich composition of POFA. BET results reveals that KCC-1 (POFA) exhibits an equivalent surface area but larger pore size compared to KCC-1 (TEOS). The UV-Vis results show the absorption of light at various wavelengths, revealing an enhanced absorption rate in the case of Fe/KCC-1. The findings revealed that Fe/KCC-1 exhibited a fibrous silica structure, attributed to the remarkable characteristics of KCC-1, facilitating a homogeneous distribution of Fe with smaller particle size, thereby reinforcing the metal-support interaction.
