520 3 _aChlorine is widely used for water treatment due to its effectiveness in disinfection. However, chlorine gas leaks pose significant risks, including health hazards and environmental contamination. This study focuses on the Kasigui water treatment plant in Sabah, which is situated close to residential area. The objective is to minimize the potential risks to the local population in the event of a chlorine gas leak by predicting the affected areas and proposing effective evacuation routes. The motivation behind this research is to improve emergency response techniques and reduce the impact on public health and the environment. The methodology involves modelling the dispersion of chlorine gas using simulation software. Wind speed and direction data are collected from the Malaysian Meteorological Department to analyze wind properties. Wind rose plots are generated to visualize wind flow during different monsoon seasons. The source of the chlorine gas leak is identified, considering the interconnected piping system of three chlorine gas tanks at the water treatment plant. The expected flow rate, concentration, and duration of the plume are determined. The atmospheric stability category of the region is identified based on weather conditions and Pasquill stability classification. Gaussian dispersion equations are used to model the chlorine plume dispersion, considering urban or rural areas. ALOHA software is utilized for simulation, incorporating the collected data to analyze the threat zone. The MARPLOT software is then used to map the exposure area precisely in the actual location. Finally, suitable evacuation routes are proposed based on the threat zone mapping. Existing roads are utilized, while potential areas affected by chlorine plumes are avoided. The expected findings are to predict the risk level and affected area of chlorine dispersion from a hypothetical leak at the Kasigui water treatment plant based on wind speed and direction and propose suitable evacuation routes for the residents.
