520 3 _aThe successful synthesis of Ni on waste sludge (WS) support surface was validated through the identification of mesostructure characteristics as evidenced by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method in a Quantachrome AUTOSORB 1 instrument and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The WS underwent pre-treatment via HCl treated (HT) method and was analysed for its chemical composition using X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis. Various amount of Ni was loaded onto the synthesized WS using the ultrasonic impregnation method. The impact of Ni loading on WS physiochemical properties and ethanol dry reforming (EDR) was investigated in a stainless steel fixed-bed reactor at 700˚C and atmospheric pressure, employing a 1:1:1 C2H5OH:CO2:N2 volumetric feed composition. An increase in Ni loading on WS from 5wt% to 10wt% resulted in an increase in the BET surface area while loading up to 15wt% led to a decrease in the BET surface area as evidenced by N2 adsorption-desorption and XRD analysis. The 10wt% Ni/WS exhibited a larger area (143.0062 m2/g) and pore diameter (7.67315 nm), indicating a well-dispersed Ni species on the WS surface. The catalytic performance of EDR followed the sequence of 10wt% > 5wt% >15wt% Ni/WS. This trend was attributed to the even distribution of Ni and the favourable Ni-O-Si interaction in the 10wt% Ni/WS as indicated by FTIR, resulting in reduced coke formation (5.75% carbon) as evidenced by Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The weaker Ni-O-Si interaction and limited basic sites in 15wt% Ni/WS led to the lowest H2/CO ratio, catalytic activity and stability, favouring the Reverse Water Gas Shift (RWGS) reaction and carbon formation. This discovery underscores the excellent performance of 10wt% of Ni loaded on WS as low-cost adsorbent for H2 fuel production.
