520 3 _aThe project aims to investigate the synthesis and characterization of activated carbon derived from spent coffee grounds as a potential adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Spent coffee grounds, a widely available waste material, possess a high carbon content and porous structure, making them a promising precursor for activated carbon production. The process involves a series of steps, including carbonization, activation, and characterization. The carbonization process converts the organic components of the coffee grounds into carbon, while the activation process enhances the surface area and porosity of the carbonized material. The synthesized activated carbon will be subjected to characterization techniques, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, to evaluate its physical and chemical properties. The adsorption capacity of the activated carbon will be assessed by conducting batch adsorption experiments using methylene blue. The project aims to determine the effect of different activation temperatures, Tact and activation time, tact on adsorption capacity of spent coffee ground and also to synthesize and characterize activated carbon from spent coffee ground as an adsorbent for wastewater treatment. The study involves collecting samples from Dunkin's Donuts in Gambang and preparing activated carbon from spent coffee grounds through a series of washing and drying processes. Carbonization is performed at 500°C under inert conditions for 60 minutes. The chemical activation process utilizes H3PO4 as the activating agent, with various Tact (500°C to 900°C) and tact (30 min to 120 min) parameters. The results showed that the activated carbon produced with a chemical activation temperature of 900°C and a chemical activation time of 120 minutes had the best percentage removal of methylene blue. The activation temperature and time should be taken into account as they significantly influence the adsorption properties of the activated carbon.
