520 3 _aThe palm oil industry contributes to Malaysia's economic growth, but it produces substantial quantities of palm oil mill effluent (POME) wastewater. Even after treatment, POME often does not comply with the Environmental Quality Act (EQA) discharge standards, emphasising the need for effective tertiary treatment methods. This research is to prepare boiler ash from oil palm mill and to investigate the effectiveness of BOD, COD and colour removal from POME final discharge using boiler ash. The experiments were conducted under different adsorbent dosages (5, 10 and 15 g/100 mL) and stirred at 400 rpm for 10 min. The colour was observed every minute for 10 minutes. The changes in wastewater quality parameters including BOD, COD, and colour for pre- and post-treated were analysed. From the experiments, the most effective treatment was using 15 g/100 mL of adsorbent dosage for 10 min. Higher adsorbent dosage showed higher removal efficiency of BOD, COD and colour. The results show that the COD removal efficiency was 82.17%, BOD removal efficiency was 88.64% and the removal efficiency of colour is 86.90% or may be higher. The high percentage removal efficiencies of BOD and COD levels indicate that the boiler ash was effective in removing the organic contaminant inside the POME sample. The post-treated POME parameters reached the discharge standard of EQA 1974 by DOE which the BOD was 5 mg/L and met the standard A of discharge standard, which was not greater than 20 mg/L. The COD was 84 mg/L, which was not greater than 250 mg/L and the colour value was 131 ADMI, which was not greater than 200 ADMI. Both COD and colour reached the standard B of the discharge standard.
