520 3 _aFurfural is one of the important chemicals that can be recovered from biomass hydrolysate. This research explores the improvement of furfural separation using modified commercial nanofiltration membranes. Using surface grafting, modified membranes were used in the experiment along with reagent, sodium carbonate with different concentration of the sodium carbonate solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to characterize the modified membrane's chemical functional group. The furfural rejection %, flux recovery ratio, and flux utilizing furfural aqueous solution and EFB biomass hydrolysate solution were then used to evaluate the modified membrane. The optimal membrane for furfural recovery from EFB biomass hydrolysate will be determined by a modified membrane that obtained more than 80% of furfural rejection. Among the modified membranes, the NF5-5wt% concentration of sodium carbonate variants displayed the highest furfural rejection rate of 90.70% and an exceptional flux recovery ratio of 91.23.%, indicating improved performance in comparison to the unmodified NF5 membrane. It underscores the potential of membrane post-modification as a viable strategy to optimize the processing of biomass hydrolysate, contributing to more efficient and sustainable bio-refinery operations. Future work will focus on scaling up the modification process and evaluating membrane performance with real industrial biomass hydrolysate streams.
