520 3 _aMaleic and succinic acids are crucial industrial compounds with diverse applications in various sectors, including medicine, polymers, and resins. However, conventional extraction methods face limitations in terms of environmental impact, efficiency, and selectivity. Supported liquid membranes (SLMs) present a sustainable alternative to conventional separation methods due to their energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness. This study employs the SLM system to recover maleic and succinic acids from aqueous solutions. A polyethersulfone (PES) flat-sheet membrane was fabricated using a composition of 15 wt.% PES, 42.5 wt.% dimethyl acetamide (DMAc), and 42.5 wt.% polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG 200). The concentration of the carrier in the liquid membrane phase, which is Aliquat 336 diluted in 2-ethyl hexanol, and the concentration of the stripping phase, which is sodium hydroxide (NaOH), were investigated. The optimal carrier concentration was determined to be 0.1 M Aliquat 336, which resulted in an extraction percentage of 62% for maleic acid and 57% for succinic acid when 10 g/L acids were used as the feed phase. Furthermore, the optimal NaOH concentration in the stripping phase was found to be 0.3 M, which achieved a recovery of 64% for maleic acid and 58% for succinic acid. These findings highlight the potential of SLM systems for efficient organic acid recovery. Future research should focus on improving membrane durability and scaling the process for industrial applications.
