520 3 _aStingless bees, or Meliponini, are a significant number of stingless bees with more than 500 species in tropical areas of the world such as 29 species in Malaysia. Kelulut honey, from Malaysian stingless bees, including Heterotrigona itama (H. itama) and Geniotrigona thoracica (G. thoracica), is well known for its potent antibacterial activity, thus representing one of the potential natural options for wound healing. The present investigation was aimed at the evaluation of the antibacterial effect of Kelulut honey on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, two pathogenic bacteria that are frequently implicated in wound infections. Another goal is to compare the diameter of inhibition zones of H. itama and G. thoracica honey with that of commercial-grade H. itama and G. thoracica honey and Manuka honey (UMF 12+). Finally, the study aims at formulating an antibacterial wound plaster, made of stingless bee honey, with activity equal to commercial antibacterial wound plaster. An agar well diffusion assay was employed, comparing undiluted Kelulut honey (100%) against a sugar base, and medical standard Manuka honey (UMF 12+). The outcome is based on the quantification of the diameter of the most expanded inhibition zone from the antibacterial tested in the agar well diffusion assay experiment.
