520 3 _aUnique wetland environments such as peat swamp ecosystems give a significant impact on the regional carbon storage. However, they are also main sources of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), specifically under conditions of land degradation or biomass burning. The ability of the fine particles, namely, PM₁₀ and PM₂.₅ to penetrate deep into the human respiratory system cause serious health impacts. The limitation data exist on the elemental characteristics of PM become one of the critical issues besides the growing concerns over air quality degradation in peatland regions. Objective of this study was to analyze the concentration levels, morphological features, and elemental composition of PM10 and PM2.5 collected from the study area over a specified monitoring period. Gravimetric analysis was implemented to measured mass concentrations, while Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) was utilized to characterize particle morphology and elemental content. Besides that, when the risk of peatland emissions is heightened, particulate samples were taken using a high-volume air sampler over a two-month monitoring period during the dry season. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to analyze the collected samples in order to define the concentration of key elemental components. The main finding shows that the concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were higher than the limits set by the national and international air quality guidelines, specifically during periods of low humidity and increased temperature. Morphological analysis demonstrated that the particles were largely irregular and porous, typical of combustion-derived particulates. Dominant elements such as carbon (C), oxygen (O), potassium (K), and sulfur (S) was identified by the elemental analysis, and suggesting a strong influence from biomass combustion processes. The finding illustrates the considerable contribution of peatland emissions to ambient air pollution and underscore the need for effective monitoring and management strategies to mitigate health and environmental impacts in peat swamp regions.
