520 3 _aThis research explores the feasibility of employing calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)₂) derived from marine waste (cockle shells and cuttlefish bone) as an effective lignin removal agent from oil palm frond (OPF) juice, a promising substrate for bioprocessing. Lignin, a prevalent phenolic compound within OPF juice, significantly inhibits microbial growth and fermentation efficiency. The quantification of lignin content, utilizing a modified TAPPI 222 method, revealed a substantial concentration of 4.29 g/L in raw OPF juice. Furthermore, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis of the solid precipitate confirmed the presence of characteristic lignin functional groups. To mitigate this inhibitory effect, an alkaline treatment protocol was developed utilizing Ca(OH)₂ synthesized from readily available marine waste sources (cockle shell and cuttlebone fish). This approach demonstrated significant lignin removal efficiency, achieving up to 94.45%, while concurrently preserving a high sugar recovery rate of 85.09%. This study underscores the potential of valorizing marine waste as a sustainable source of Ca(OH)₂ for enhancing the biodegradability and processability of OPF juice, thereby promoting a more sustainable and circular biorefinery model.
