520 3 _aThe purpose of this study is to assess the risks and hazards faced by residents during flooding events in Kuantan, Pahang, and evaluate the effectiveness of flood barriers as a mitigation strategy. Flooding is one of the most frequent natural disasters in Malaysia, causing significant damage to infrastructure, property, and lives. In Kuantan, the geographical and climatic conditions, particularly during the northeast monsoon, exacerbate flooding impacts. According to previous studies, the severity and frequency of floods have increased due to climate change and urban development, placing the local population and economy at higher risk. The objective of this study is to determine the key risks and hazards faced during flooding, assess the level of community awareness regarding flood barriers, and evaluate the barriers' potential effectiveness as a flood management solution. To achieve these objectives, a questionnaire was distributed to residents in flood-prone areas of Kuantan to gather data on their experiences, knowledge, and perceptions of flood barriers. Interviews with local authorities provided additional insights into flood management strategies. Data collected were analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)
