520 3 _aWater is need for all life in this earth. The sources of water are surface water and ground water. It is important to keep this source clean and free from any pollution. In Malaysia, National Monitoring Network was established in 1978. The aims are to establish the status of river water quality and to detect changes in water quality as a result of development activities. There were 902 manual stations in 120 basins (462 rivers) were establish. Among the program included are in-situ measurements and sampling and laboratory analyses. There were 15 automatic water quality monitoring stations on major rivers in Malaysia. Among the reasons are to detect changes in river water quality on a continuous basis, water quality levels violating the ambient standard for specific parameters will be transmitted real-time to DOE and immediate inspection will be conducted at suspected sites. There are six parameters to detemline the Water Quality Index (WQI) based on Department the formula given by DOE. The main objectives of the WQI is to used it as a preliminary means of assessment of a water body for compliance with the standards adopted for five designated classes of beneficial uses. -Author
