520 3 _aTimber industry grows rapidly in Malaysia and contributes in various sectors such as furniture, joineries, roof trusses and so on. The uses of timber as the material in construction are always related to the timber joinery. There are several types of timber joints, varies from the carpentry to the engineered joints. This thesis discussed three types of timber joint, which are nailed joint, bolted joint and nail plated joint. The objective of this thesis is to find out the most economical method used in timber connection. To determine the economic term for timber joint, factors such as cost, strength and life span should be considered. Further more, this thesis also to identify the most practical timber joint used by manufacturers in construction industry. The strength and failure modes for each type of timber joints are determined through this thesis too. This study can provided and increased the knowledge of timber joint especially to them involved in construction industries. Questionnaire survey and laboratory testing are the main methods used to achieve the objectives for this study. Merpauh timber is used for the testing. From the questionnaire analysis, nail plate have been agreed as the most economical method and practical used in timber construction. From the tensile and flexural tests, the result show the nail plated joint can sustained the highest tensile and flexural loading with the minimal failure mode compare to nailed and bolted joint. It can be concluded that, the results obtained from experimental and questionnaire analysis have prove and shown that the nail plated joint is better than nailed and bolted joint. -Author
