520 3 _aWater pollution is one of the phenomenons that occurred nowadays. It has become serious problem and gives bad impacts on human health, aquatic lives and environmental. As an other alternative in treatment of wastewater, an ecological technological approach has been developed involving the use of plants to clean up or remediate soils and water contaminated with toxic metals which is called Phytoremediation process. It is used because it has ecological advantages and economic since it use the natural resources. There are processes involved in phytoremediation that has been identified such as phytodegradation, rhizodegradation, phytovolatilisation and phytoextraction process. Phytodegradation is plant metabolism of contaminant while rhizodegradation is process of microbial metabolism of contaminant in the rhizophere. The phytovolatilization is a removal of contaminant from water or ground and subsequent release to the atmosphere. The phytoextraction is the uptake of metal from soil by plant root into above ground portions of plant. All these process have their own level of uptaken the heavy metal from plants. The objectives of this project are to study and evaluate the wastewater remediation using phytoremediation process and to identify the effectiveness of Vetiver sp as a plant in phytoremediation. In this study, Vetiver Sp (Vetiveria Zizanoides) was used to identify the effectiveness of uptake of contaminant and heavy metals. Vetiver grass has a fast and very high capacity for absorption of nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater. The scope of study is the samples of industrial wastewater has been taken from Kaneka (Malaysia) Sdn.Bhd, Gebeng, while the domestic wastewater taken from University Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and distilled water as control. Then the wastewater sample will be planted with vetiver grass and the laboratory test will be carried out. Parameter of the wastewater could be measured such as Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), pH value, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Oil and Grease, and heavy metals such as Ferum (Fe), Plumbum (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd).Average of the results obtained are under limit of Standard A and also Standard B of Environmental Quality Act 1974, Sewerage and Industrial Effluent 1979. Laboratory results shows that the vetiver grass can remove 85.7% BOD, 2.69% pH 64.6% DO, and heavy metals 51.6% I, 89.9% Pb ,66% Cd and COD 46% in the industrial wastewater. In conclusion the vetiver grass is potential to reduce the heavy metal in wastewater and low cost since it using the plant. -Author
