520 3 _aGroundwater is the water that located below the Earth’s surface in soil pore spaces and in the fractures of rock formations. When the rain falls, some of it permeates into the soil and others are evaporating or run off into rivers. Groundwater is water that infiltrates into pores between sand, rock and clay formation called aquifers. Aquifers act as a reservoir for groundwater. Water Supply System for Rural Area (WASRA) is a new system that treats groundwater before it is supply to the people. WASRA pretreatment system consist of three columns which are Advanced Oxidation Media column, Granular Activated Carbon column and water softener column respectively in column 1, 2 and 3. There are 11 parameters tested in this research which are Iron, Manganese, Copper, Fluoride, total colifom, E-coli, turbidity, pH, hardness, total suspended solid (TSS) and total dissolved solid (TDS). The main objectives of this research are to determine the effectiveness of WASRA pretreatment system in removing coliform bacteria and heavy metal and the second objectives are to determine the quality of groundwater so that it complies with National Standards for Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) issued by Ministry of Health (MOH) Malaysia (Second Version, January 2004). The groundwater will be treated with WASRA pretreatment system so that the groundwater is comply with the NSDWQ. The method of analysis was referred to Standards Method for the Examination of Water and Wastewater by APHA 2012. The potential of the pretreatment column in removing certain parameters from groundwater was investigated. As a result, WASRA pretreatment system has successfully removed total coliform, heavy metal which are iron and manganese about 100 %, 98 % and 96 % respectively. WASRA pretreatment system are also effective in reducing the TSS and turbidity of raw groundwater which are about 88 % and 99 % respectively. Other parameter such hardness and TDS are also removed. Fluoride is removed about 16 % but does not comply with NSDWQ. From the ANOVA analysis, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis is rejected and there is change of these parameter concentration as it enter WASRA pretreatment system. All the parameter tested are comply with the NSDWQ except for fluoride. As conclusion, WASRA pretreatment systems are capable in removing coliform bacteria and heavy metal
