520 3 _aThis study was conducted to determine the ability of Phytoremediation technology in treating groundwater that is contaminated with high heavy metal content of waste water which is known as 'backwash water'. For this purpose, two types of aquatic plants have been used as agents for the treatment of wastewater is a water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) and water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes). To identify potential plants to absorb heavy metals from the waste, two tanks are used for placing the plants. All analyzes were carried out on wastewater in this study are based on the Standard Procedures issued by American Public Health Association (APHA, 2005). In addition, the study of plant morphology is also conducted, where the study using FESEM/EDX methods to determine the type of heavy metals found in these plant parts. Part of this plant is divided into three parts which is leaf, stems and roots. Based on the results obtained, the justification of the validity of the data was created. Based on experiments that have been carried out, different species of plants have the ability to remove metal at different levels of effectiveness. Thus, it was found that the two species have been used as agent phytoremediation is successful in removing heavy metals which is removal rate from 50.79% to 88.49%. Pistia stratiotes precedes absorption rates of various heavy metals in high rates. The overall, backwash water treated with the technology 'phytoremediation', this is in line with the "Standard of Industrial Effluent Discharge Limits for Mixed Effluent 'issued by the Environment Quality Act (Waste Industries), 2009. Whereas in knowing the type of heavy metals found each part of the plant obtained roots can absorb more heavy metals than the leaves and stems. In conclusion, phytoremediation technology has a very high potential remove pollutant from sources such water. In addition, parts of the plant that Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes potentially absorb certain heavy metals with different content contained in contaminated water. Therefore, it is appropriate to apply the technology on a larger scale to treat waste water aquatic plants such as the ability to remove heavy metals at high rates.
