520	3		_aWater is essential resources for life. Preserving water quality is important for human to use in daily life. Today, our water resources under pressure. Only 0.77 % held as fresh water. Water quality can be affected by the presence of toxic substances and harmful microorganism. Every year less than 3-4 million individuals die because of waterborne diseases., including 2 million kids who die because of diarrhea (WHO). Contaminated drinking water, poor sanitation and pathogenic microorganism can lead to diarrhea. Thus, improving the access to clean water and safe sanitation are important. Water pollution not only effects human health but also effect aquatic life. Ocean, river, lake is the main habitat for aquatic life. In this research, sample of water surface was taken from Tekek village, Tioman Island. This surface water are highly contaminated by nitrate (NO3-). To reduce contamination in surface water, natural treatment are used in removing contaminants from surface water in Tekek village, Tioman Island. This one of the effective ways in removing contaminants from surface water without use any chemical substances and help to sustained environment from other pollution. Natural treatment that used in this research are wood chip and rice straw. This material are readily available. Other than that, this research also study effect of pH, contact time, temperature and absorption of wood chip and rice straw. Method that used in this research, three attempts conducted which is first attempts are 100% rice straw, second attempts are 100% wood chip, and third attempt are 50% rice straw and 50% wood chip. Sample will best test for 7 days. Data will collected from day 1 until day 7. Parameter used in this research are biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, turbidity, temperature, and nitrate (NO3-). Overall result from this research follow the National Water Quality Standars (NWQS) for Malaysia. In further study, we can know the capabilities of natural treatment in removing contaminants from surface water. This can help residents in Tekek village, Tioman Island to get clean water for daily life.
