Agarwood (Gaharu) is precious resinous wood formed in heartwood of Aquilaria tree, an archaic tropical evergreen tree native to Golf of Tonkin, Vietnam and other countries of Southeast Asia. The odor of Agarwood is complex and pleasing. As a result, Agarwood and its essential oil gained great cultural and religious significance in ancient civilizations around the world. Nowadays, Agarwood has been widely use in aroma industry, medicine, indoor air improvement and fumigation and religious practices and spiritual life. Agarwood oil is obtained using a hydro distillation where an aromatic chemical is extracted from Agarwood chips by steam and condensed which provide relatively high yield of product and low cost of running the process. This study is aim to improve a yield of Agarwood oil extraction using hydro distillation by manipulating the process factor such as soaking time and solid to solvent ratio. The optimization is carried out using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Central Composite Design (CCD). Response Surface Methodologies is a branch of Design of Experiment (DOE) which a response of interest is influenced by several variables of the process and the main objective of using this method is to find the optimum condition. The optimal condition for hydro distillation of Agarwood oil was found at 9 hour of soaking time and 1:20 for the solid to solvent ratio. The yield of 0.1573 percent (weight percent) was achieved using this optimized condition. This gave 31.5 percent increment of yield percentage in comparison to the initial experiment which gives 0.1076 percent of yield. -Author
