Pakistan's tourism industry has long faced challenges, including geopolitical tensions and environmental disasters, with the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating these issues. This has underscored the critical need for crisis-specific resilience frameworks. Despite efforts to revitalize the sector, a significant lack of empirical studies persists, leaving critical gaps in understanding how to enhance the industry's adaptability and sustainability. This research addresses these gaps with three objectives: identifying resilience factors, testing them, and developing a comprehensive resilience model. Using a sequential mixed-methods approach, qualitative data were collected through 10 semi-structured interviews with tourism business experts and analyzed using ATLAS.ti software, uncovering eight critical themes: government support, a focus on foreign tourists, technological innovation, proactive planning, domestic tourism, limited-scale reopening of tourism, tourism education, and consumer and employee confidence. These themes were validated through a quantitative study involving a survey of 114 hotel managers, analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) in SmartPLS. The quantitative findings corroborated the qualitative themes, providing strong support for the hypotheses derived from the qualitative phase. The resilience model was then developed by integrating qualitative and quantitative findings through a joint display analysis, grounded in resilience theory to offer a robust framework for understanding and enhancing tourism resilience in the face of crises. Methodologically, the study makes a significant contribution by blending qualitative insights with quantitative validation, advancing the field of tourism resilience research. The implications are substantial: policymakers and industry leaders can leverage this research to implement targeted support measures, align strategies with evolving tourist needs, and harness technology and education to bolster resilience. Furthermore, the study provides critical directions for future research, reinforcing its relevance to both academia and practical applications, ensuring a sustainable and adaptable future for Pakistan's tourism industry. |
