Activated sludge process with sequencing batch reactor (SBR) is a good method for oxytetracycline (OTC) removal due to its simple process structure, small footprint and cost-effectiveness. However, OTC has been shown to cause sludge toxicity by interrupting the nutrient removal process of microorganism. Hence, this study aims to acclimatize activated sludge for effective removal of OTC. The sludge sample was collected from Star Feedmills, Beranang, and the liquid portion was decanted and replaced with synthetic wastewater. The experiment was conducted in a sequencing batch reactor for 60 cycles (each cycle is 2 days) across four phases of gradually increasing OTC concentration at 0, 5, 10 and 15 mg/L. The mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS), mixed liquor volatile suspended solid (MLVSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD) was measured by APHA standard methods while effluent OTC concentration was quantified spectrometrically with sodium molybdate via UV–Vis at 390 nm. For MLSS and MLVSS, the sludge concentration dropped slightly when it entered a new phase due to OTC toxicity, but it eventually regained its sludge concentration after a few cycles by adapting to the increased OTC concentration. The MLSS increased from 5360 mg/L to 7470 mg/L while MLVSS increased from 4160 mg/L to 6400 mg/L. There was no significant inhibitory effect of OTC on the COD removal efficiency. As for OTC removal, the sludge has shown improvement on its removal efficiency from 54.14 % to 78.28 % in phase 4. In short, the activated sludge was able to acclimatize against OTC, evidently by the increase in MLSS and decrease in effluent OTC concentration.
