Biopolymer nanofibers are promising for drug delivery systems (DDS) due to their biodegradability, high surface area, and biocompatibility. This study focuses on the fabrication and characterization of nanofibers composed of polylactic acid (PLA), starch, and nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) with varying concentrations (1 wt%, 3 wt%, and 5 wt%) for biomedical applications. PLA is widely utilised due to its biodegradability and biocompatibility, but its inherent brittleness and hydrophobic nature limit its mechanical performance and water adsorption capacity. To address these limitations, starch was incorporated to enhance hydrophilicity, while NCC was added to reinforce mechanical strength and stability. The nanofibers were fabricated using the needleless electrospinning technique and the morphological, chemical, and mechanical properties of the nanofibers were analysed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), swelling behaviour, and weight loss analysis. Among the tested formulations, nanofibers with 3 wt% NCC exhibited the larger fiber diameter, swelling resistance, and structural integrity, mitigating PLA’s hydrophobic limitations while maintaining optimal performance. These findings highlight the potential of PLA-starch-NCC nanofibers, particularly at 3 wt% NCC, in developing sustainable and high-performance biomaterials for advanced drug delivery systems.
