Subject(s): Dissertation note: Thesis (Master of Engineering (Automotive)) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2007 Review: The present thesis deals with the development of a computer program for thorough investigation of the fuel injection process in a mechanical diesel fuel injection system. Theory of water hammer was used to write momentum and continuity equation for one dimensional, unsteady incompressible fluid flow through the pipe. The initial condition was defined by zero oil velocity and constant residual pressure. At the pump and nozzle end, boundary conditions were developed by mass balance. This completed the mathematical model, which was solved by the method of characteristics using an optimized explicit finite difference scheme. Fuel pipe length was divided in equal number of divisions, fixing the space points and time step was determined for convergence of numerical solutions. Characteristics mesh was generated by computing velocity and pressure for each internal nodal point at successive time increment. At both the pump and nozzle end of the pipe, only one characteristic was available. It was iteratively solved along with appropriate boundary condition. Calculations were repeated until the desired level of nozzle end pressure. The effects of all significant parameters were investigated on the nozzle end pressure. The rate of discharge and depth of penetration were also computed. The results have been shown in the form of tables and graphs -Author
