Project paper (Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Automotive) -- Universiti Malaysia Pahang - 2008
erodynamic shape/design of a car is one of the factors that determine the performance of the car. Vehicle which is not aerodynamically enough will produce high drag force. This project focused on what happen at the A-pillar or specifically at side mirror is investigate and the resulted drag force is analyzed. This study investigates and analyzes the flow and drag force of side mirror on hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) Proton Iswara model. The investigation is carried out by computational studies for a simplified three dimensional model of Proton Iswara at different velocity. The model was created by using CAD and analyzed with CFD software. There were two models that were done which is the body of the car without the side mirror and the body of the car with side mirror. The measurement is taken from real dimension and sketch in CFD software. The sketch then is going into simulation process at different case. The car is subjected to the velocity from 40 km/h to 110 km/h which is allowed in Malaysia’s road regulation. The A-pillar area is studied based on airflow, drag force, pressure contour on door mirror and surface of the car and also in terms of aeropower. With the presence of the side mirror at A-pillar area, the drag force will increase as having more frontal area and will be higher if the shape of the side mirror is not aerodynamic. Increasing the drag force/drag coefficient will make more power is needed in order to overcome the drag force created. Thus, fuel consumption will be higher as the sources that give power to the car to overcome the drag and move freely. The results from the computational studies are analyzed, interpret and validate with other corresponding journals
