Speed humps are used to control vehicle speeds or reduce the volume of traffic in 20 km/hr or 30km/hr zones, in some cases. Vehicle accidents present as a very serious threat to human lives, therefore, the need for a closer look at the ways of controlling pedestrian injury and fatalities due to vehicle accidents on roads. One way of ensuring that desire speed limits are not exceeded is the used of speed humps. The main objectives for this study are to defme the effective design for different speed limits and traffic flow, and to obtain the most suitable place for traffic calming. The method approach in this study is by doing a site investigation to survey the existing speed humps installed and pedestrian's used the road. Second, conducted a traffic survey (traffic counting) to fmd out the volume for each peak hours that users used the road along the study site area, where from the data the best speed humps design can be recommended for the road. For the last is to work on spot speed determination to find out whether the existing speed humps design is apposite with the speed limit at the study site area. For this study, results shows that the volume from traffic survey was in range of 1,000 - 5,000 vehicles per day, and the spot speed determination data show the mean in range 36.5 - 38.8 km/hr. The recommendation for the best speed humps for this study site area is a sinusoidal speed hump, with 4.0 m in length and 100 mm height (25 km/hr crossing speeds).-Author
